POSITION SUMMARY:
The Press Trainee is responsible for learning the setup, operation, and basic maintenance of printing presses. This role supports experienced Press Operators in producing high-quality printed labels and packaging while adhering to established safety, quality and production standards.
The trainee will gain hands-on experience with press functions, ink systems, substrates and job changeovers, while developing the technical skills necessary to advance into a Press Operator role. This position requires a strong willingness to learn, attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Press Operators with setup, operation and shutdown of printing presses.
- Verify that all components required for the job are present prior to startup.
- Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe handling of inks, solvents and equipment.
- Monitor press performance to ensure conformance to quality specifications.
- Identify and flag non-conforming areas in converted rolls for removal during rewinding.
- Support press setup activities, including mounting plates, installing anilox rolls, loading substrates and preparing inks.
- Assist with job changeovers, wash-ups and cleaning to minimize downtime and maintain efficiency.
- Monitor print quality and identify defects such as color variation, misregistration or print imperfections.
- Perform basic quality checks using measurement tools and visual inspection standards.
- Maintain cleanliness of the press area, including ink trays, print decks and surrounding workspace.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubrication and equipment inspections.
- Accurately complete production and quality documentation.
- Communicate effectively with Press Operators, Supervisors and team members regarding job status, issues and material needs.
- Provide feedback and suggestions for process improvements.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
- Assist in troubleshooting minor press or print issues under supervision.
- Participate in training and development opportunities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste and improve efficiency and quality.
- Ensure dies and tooling are cleaned, inspected and returned to proper storage locations.
- Properly identify and return excess materials to designated areas.
- Place inventory tags and finished goods in designated locations with accurate identification.
- Maintain good housekeeping and organization in all work areas.
- Demonstrate consistent, professional work habits, including attendance and punctuality.
- Comply with all company policies, procedures and safety requirements.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in printing or manufacturing preferred.
- Commitment to safety and maintaining a clean, organized work environment.
- Munsell Hue Test score of 100 or lower (Administered internally).
- Previous printing experience preferred.
- Basic mechanical aptitude with a willingness to learn equipment operation and maintenance.
- Ability to read and follow job tickets, work instructions and SOPs.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly related to print quality and consistency.
- Basic math skills, including measurements and simple calculations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented production environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow direction.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
